DESCRIPTION:The Rotary Club of New Castle will be learning about the PA Home Rule system this Monday. \nPer the May 19\, 2021 New Castle News article (https://www.ncnewsonline.com/news/local_news/home-rule-passes-transition-team-will-take-next-steps-in-process/article_3c462edb-9ee3-55a2-ac4d-baa2e7c1f604.html#:~:text=New%20Castle%2C%20PA%20(16103)&text=Home%20Rule%20passed%2C%20gaining%2060%20percent%20of%20the%20votes.&text=Home%20Rule%20charter%20commission%20Toby\,asking%20them%20to%20vote%20’yes. ) The structure of New Castle’s government will begin to change after the Home Rule referendum passed by gaining 60 percent of the vote in May’s referendum. \nOur speaker on the topic will be DEBORAH J. GRASS\, OWNER\, GRASS ROOT SOLUTIONS. \nDebby has extensive experience working with communities across the Commonwealth of PA.  For the past seven years\, she has been the Owner of Grass Root Solutions\, a full-service municipal consulting firm. Previously\, Debby was the Borough Manager in Dormont Borough\, Allegheny County\, for 11 years\, and the City Administrator for the City of Butler\, Butler County\, for four years. She worked for the PA Department of Community and Economic Development for four years as a Local Government Policy Specialist. She also led the Municipal Government Division as a Senior Consultant for Delta Development Group for six years. \nDebby earned a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration degree from Slippery Rock University and did graduate-level work in the Master of Science in Administration (MSA) program there.  She is a member of the Association for Pennsylvania Municipal Managers (APMM) and the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA).  She is an instructor for DCED\, PSATS\, GFOA\, APMM\, and the Local Government Academy.  She serves on the Board of Directors for the Hilltop Economic Development Corporation and the Tri-COG Land Bank in Allegheny County. \nAs a member of the New Castle Act 47 team\, she provides technical support and assistance for community development\, code enforcement\, public outreach\, and operational best practices. A New Castle native\, she is deeply committed to advancing the City as it moves toward an Exit from Act 47 status. \n

SUMMARY:Club #89 Tour of New Castle School of Trades
DESCRIPTION:The New Castle School of Trades was founded in 1945 and has become a multipurpose technical and trade institution. Over the years\, the school has moved from the era of educating competent tradesmen\, through the phase of the more sophisticated and innovative craftsman\, to today’s highly skilled technicians. \nIn 1954\, with the growing number of enrollments\, the school outgrew its original location in New Castle and moved to Route 422 in Pulaski\, PA. \nDuring January 1973\, the school was accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the National Association of Trade and Technical Schools\, (ACCSC\, formerly NATTS)\, Washington\, D.C. and in 1982\, the school was approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to award the Associate in Specialized Technology Degree in the Electrical Technology program. The latest Associate in Specialized Technology Degree programs offered at the school are Automotive Technology\, Machinist Technology\, Motorcycle & Power Equipment Technology\, Refrigeration & A/C Technology\, Building Technology\, Industrial Maintenance with Wind & Solar Technology\, and Diesel & Heavy Equipment Repair Technology. \nAlong with the Associate in Specialized Technology Degree programs\, diploma programs are offered in: Combination Welding\, Commercial Truck Driving\, Construction Trades\, Industrial Maintenance and Heavy Equipment Operations with Commercial Truck Driving. \nIn November 1988\, the school was acquired by EFC Trade\, Inc. Today\, as throughout sixty plus years of operation\, the programs continue to practice “hands-on” training and have produced thousands of qualified graduates for successful employment in business and industry. \nIn July of 2011 the school moved to a new 93\,000 square foot facility approximately 6 miles east of the previous facility. The school moved eight of the ten programs: Automotive Technology\, Electrical Technology\, Building Technology\, Refrigeration & A/C Technology\, Machinist Technology\, Combination Welding\, Commercial & Industrial Maintenance\, and Construction Trades. Commercial Truck Driving\, Heavy Equipment Operations with Commercial Truck Driving\, Motorcycle & Power Equipment Technology\, and Diesel & Heavy Equipment Repair Technology remained at the old school\, which is now the Satellite Location. In 2016 the school opened a branch campus in East Liverpool\, Ohio offering Combination Welding\, Commercial Truck Driving\, Industrial Maintenance\, and Refrigeration & Climate Control.

SUMMARY:Rotary Club #89 Learns about the Veterans Breakfast Club
DESCRIPTION:With less than one-half of one-percent of our nation’s population serving in the military\, it’s easy for most Americans to go through their daily lives without considering the special bonds\, burdens\, and benefits of military service. But our nation’s veterans are all around us\, and each has a story to tell. All we need to do is ask. \nSince 2008\, the Veterans Breakfast Club (VBC) has gathered thousands of veterans together with their families\, friends\, and neighbors so that veterans can share their stories\, and the community can learn from them. Their mission is “to create communities of listening around veterans and their stories so that this living history is never forgotten.” They believe that through their work\, people will be educated\, healed and inspired. \nEach year\, they hold over 60 storytelling events at over 30 locations throughout Western Pennsylvania. There are no membership dues or requirements and everyone is welcome to attend\, including non-veterans.

DESCRIPTION:Angie Urban\, Executive Director\, of New Visions for Lawrence County  will be talking about “Building Community in Lawrence County” -sharing ways that coordinated efforts are beginning to see revitalization take foot in our area and New Visions’ role in it. \n  \nAfter graduating from Penn State University\, completing an internship at Disney World\, and serving with\na year of AmeriCorps NCCC\, Angie first moved to this area and into her parent’s basement- intending to\nbe here for a year. Tops. And then anywhere but here. However\, she fell in love with this community\, in\nlove with a boy from Mercer\, and now calls this home! Angie serves now as the Executive Director of New Visions\, a nonprofit organization aimed at helping initiate\, support\, and sustain revitalization efforts in Lawrence County. She is helping to reimagine the opportunities for growth in our area. Angie\nhas found a role in our community that blends the imagination of Disney and the service of AmeriCorps\,\nto make our community a better place to live. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Sean Kanan - Author of Success Factor X
DESCRIPTION:Sean Kanan is an internationally renowned actor best known for is iconic role as Deacon Sharpe in the daytime drama The Bold and the Beautiful. Sean has been a hard-working actor ever since receiving his degree from UCLA. Shortly after graduation\, he landed one of the major roles in the megahit Karate Kid III\, starring as Ralph Macchio’s nemesis. He followed quickly followed with roles on the TV series produced by Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders\, and Oliver Stone’s Wild Palms. He subsequently moved to network television with roles on General Hospital\, Sunset Beach\, The Bold and the Beautiful\, and The Young and the Restless. \nRecently\, with soap opera fans clamoring for his return\, Sean revived his role as Deacon Sharpe on The Young and The Restless\, the show from which The Bold and The Beautiful was spun off. Sean also recently completed filming South 32 directed by Jake Barsha\, Limelight directed by James Cullen Bressack\, Youthful Daze\, and  Prodigal\, the directorial debut Julie Pacino\, the daughter of Al Pacino\, in which he was cast as in the leading role. \nOther TV credits include guest roles on Freddy\, Who’s the Boss?\, VIP\, The Nanny\, Walker: Texas Ranger\, Lois and Clark\, and True Jackson VP. Film credits include Hack\, where he starred and served as Executive Producer\, as well as the comedy\, Chump Change\, the action films Chaos Factor and Extreme Limits\, and the independent film 10 Attitudes. \nIn addition to acting\, Kanan frequents the comedy club circuit and makes numerous appearances at the world famous Hollywood “Improv\,” “The Laugh Factory” and the “HaHa\,” where he offers his perspective on his ten years in daytime television\, his time living in Italy when he was a featured contestant on the Italian Dancing with the Stars\, and getting beaten up in Karate Kid III which doesn’t compare to life with his wife and five children. He also toured with the USO\, entertaining in places such as Bosnia and Kosovo. \nSean is the son of Rotarian Dale Perelman and his wife Michele. \n \n  \nSuccess Factor X \nSociety has a preoccupation with celebrities\, pop-culture and the pursuit of success. There is no shortage of autobiographical success books. How is “Success Factor X” unique? Most notably\, it is not a business book on what it takes to be successful. Rather\, it showcases highly accomplished people sharing tips and advice based on their lives and personal journeys. The book has a wonderful hybrid nature combining a coffee table format with insight and inspiration. “Success Factor X” is not about accomplished people\, it is by accomplished people. Our book has original content provided directly from the participants. It is an upbeat compilation of the advice from fifty successful people\, a quick read and a book that can be referred to often.
